A cast of young performers has been named the Best Young Cast at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The group from Ashville, Harrogate, received the Derek Award following a sold-out six-night run of their original rock musical Beth.

Rhiannon Wilkinson, head of Ashville, said: "Against this backdrop, everyone involved in this production should take a bow.

"It is an achievement that has rewarded months of hard work in transferring the musical from a school stage to a world stage."

The Derek Awards have been recognising outstanding shows at the Fringe for two decades.

This year’s festival featured more than 4,200 shows across 258 venues, with performers from 71 countries.

Beth is a 70-minute, high-energy reimagining of Macbeth.

Written by the school’s performing arts team, it transforms Shakespeare’s tragedy into the story of Beth, an ambitious warrior.

The cast, aged 13 to 20, performed at TheSpace@Venue45.

Karl Boyd, Ashville’s director of performing arts, said: "Taking our production to the Fringe was always going to be a never-to-be-forgotten experience for all our budding theatre and rock stars.

"But to be judged Best Young Cast on such a stage, at our debut at the Fringe, is a true reward for the creativity, imagination, commitment and ambition of everyone involved."
