Plans have been put forward for a poultry farm in East Yorkshire which could see an additional 90,000 broiler chickens being housed.
Park Farm Poultry Limited, which operates Park Farm in Bull Lane, Harswell, is seeking permission from East Rising of Yorkshire Council to add two new poultry houses and additional infrastructure on agricultural land.
A broiler refers to a young chicken raised and managed in agricultural settings primarily for meat production.
The 3.11 hectare site set aside in the plans – on an agricultural holding of 101 hectares – is currently made up of agricultural land in arable use and would see two additional poultry houses and associated infrastructure built on it, according to planning documents.
The buildings would be used for “rearing of broiler chickens from day old chicks to finished table weight and include feeders, drinkers and fan-assisted ventilation.”
In design documents submitted with the proposal, the existing poultry unit of four “broiler houses” with capacity for 150,000 birds would be increased by 60 per cent taking the overall limit to 240,000.
Each poultry house would measure approximately 110 metres by 22.3 metres with an eaves height of three metres, providing a floor area of approximately 2,453 square metres per house.
The layout of the new buildings would allow for the operation of the six houses to be “managed efficiently as a single unit” and so that “the development is located as far as practicable from the nearest residential properties.”
The plans say “The proposed expansion forms part of the applicant’s strategy to grow and strengthen the poultry enterprise.
“The additional houses will make efficient use of the infrastructure already in place at Park Farm, including the established access, the existing biomass heating system, the farmyard and the management and staff already on site, improving the efficiency, resilience and long-term viability of the business.
“Chicken is the most widely consumed meat in the United Kingdom, and the development will contribute to meeting that demand from a modern, well-managed production unit within the region.”
The plans said buildings are empty for 10 days of cleaning and preparation within a “flock cycle” totalling approximately 48 days, to provide around “7.6 flocks per annum”.
A proportion of the manure produced would be retained as fertiliser and the balance exported to local arable farmers for the same purpose.
One extra full-time employee would be taken on if the works are approved, the plans said.
The nearest residential properties not linked to the farm are 900 metres from the planned site, with the village of Everingham being just over a mile away.
Public views of the site would be limited to a public footpath to the west and the broiler houses would be “seen in the context of, and grouped with, existing farm buildings.”
The consultation expiry date at East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the application is November 11.
