Mother whose son was left in coma after York Hospital incident ‘begged’ for help for him

A York mother whose son nearly died after an incident at York Hospital says she had pleaded with various agencies to help him before it happened.

We are not naming him or his mother to protect his privacy.

The 18-year-old from York is now conscious again and receiving treatment at the hospital.

His mum, who lives in Dringhouses, says her son has suffered mental health problems since he was 16.

He had been an inpatient at a mental health unit. She said when he tuned 18 “the social services people had washed their hands with him, which I found disgusting”.

She said she had told health and social care workers looking after him “you’re going to allow him out sooner than you know he’s supposed to be, and lo and behold they did exactly that”.

“I said he’ll either harm someone in the public or himself,” she added.

She “begged” mental health services to do an early impact assessment on him last Friday but they said they couldn’t do anything until Monday.

On Friday night, her son twice attempted to kill himself and went missing before being found by police and taken to York Hospital for treatment.

The mother praised the first two police officers who were with her son for hours in the hospital.

But she said the officers who later took over were less attentive and were not with him at the time of the incident.

The mother also said she had pleaded with staff at the hospital to give her son some medication when it was clear he was becoming agitated.

She said: “I’ve asked, ‘please, just give him something to like calm his calm his head.'”

After the incident, “someone got me and took me in a side room, and then they put him in a coma straight away,” she said.

She added: “I’m not sleeping, I’m not eating. And all because they they didn’t listen to me.

“If they listened to me, all this could have been avoided. It’s extraordinary. They’ve all failed my son. Every professional you can think of.”

Mental health services in York are provided by the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) NHS Trust. The trust declined to comment on grounds of patient confidentiality.

North Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over the incident.

In a previous statement they said: “A full investigation is underway to establish the circumstances prior to the incident.”

A spokesperson for York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We’re sorry to hear that the family has concerns about the care provided. We take all concerns seriously and would welcome the opportunity to speak with them directly to understand and address these.

“Respecting patient confidentiality, it would not be appropriate for us to comment on an individual’s care.”

City of York Council said they were unable to comment on individual cases.
