Ofsted praises primary school where pupils are ‘happy, safe and proud to belong’

MENSTON Primary School has been praised by Ofsted following its latest inspection, with inspectors highlighting the school's strong standards in attendance and behaviour, early years provision, and personal development and wellbeing.

The school is part of Moorlands Learning Trust and a spokesperson for the trust said they were "delighted to celebrate the positive outcome" of the inspection, which recognised several areas of particularly strong practice.

Inspectors described pupils as "happy, safe and proud to belong" to the school, highlighting what they called a caring and inclusive culture. The report found that pupils understand the school's motto, "Making the world a better place", and that positive relationships create a calm and purposeful environment where children can thrive. Bullying was described as rare, with concerns dealt with quickly and effectively.

Ofsted awarded the school a Strong Standard in three areas, a recognition given when inspectors judge that leaders are working above the standard expected of them. In attendance and behaviour, inspectors praised leaders for working closely with families to overcome barriers to regular attendance and for successfully improving attendance among disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Early years provision was also recognised as a particular strength. Inspectors found that children benefit from an ambitious curriculum, high-quality phonics teaching and nurturing relationships that help them feel "safe, secure and ready to learn". The report noted that a high proportion of children reach a good level of development by the end of Reception and are well prepared for Year 1.

Personal development and wellbeing was another area singled out for praise. Inspectors said pupils benefit from a wide range of visits, residential trips, leadership opportunities and extracurricular activities that help develop confidence, resilience and independence. Pupils were also commended for their contributions to school and community life through environmental projects, fundraising and citizenship activities.

The report also acknowledged the contribution of staff, governors and colleagues across Moorlands Learning Trust, as well as the efforts of the school's pupils.

Headteacher Marie Wilson said: "We are incredibly proud of this outcome. The report reflects a school that is meeting high national expectations across all areas whilst demonstrating particularly strong practice in a number of key aspects of school life.

"Above all, it celebrates the children, staff and families who make our school such a special place to learn and grow."

The school said it would continue to build on its successes, with areas identified for further development already included within its improvement plans and ongoing work.
