A North East-made horror film described as “Byker Grove meets Scream” is set for its regional premiere in County Durham.

The Brook, a supernatural mystery directed by Durham-born filmmaker Paul Stainthorpe, will be screened at Gala Durham on Monday, October 19, at 7pm.

Blending coming-of-age drama with chilling folklore, the film follows art student Jacob as he uncovers dark secrets in the village of Elmbrook, where his mother grew up.

The village is said to be protected by a mysterious puma, and when a resident disappears, Jacob and his friends use a video camera that can see one hour into the past to unravel the mystery.

Mr Stainthorpe said: "Gala Durham has been a huge pillar of support throughout my creative journey, so I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing my debut narrative feature film to the venue.

"Filmed entirely in the North East with a talented local cast and crew, the film is a celebration of the incredible locations, creativity and filmmaking talent we have right here in our region."

The Brook debuted at London’s FrightFest earlier this year and was filmed across the North East, including Framwellgate School, Eastgate, Stanhope, Newton Hall, and Zerox Club in Newcastle.

The cast is predominantly from the region, with familiar faces such as Helen Chong and Kieron Michael, who have both performed in Gala Durham’s pantomimes.

Lizzie Glazier, artistic director at Gala Durham, said: "We’re excited to host the premiere of The Brook right here at Gala Durham.

"This incredible production is a pure North East creation, featuring talented actors, the region’s best locations, and our own Durham-born director.

"The Brook is the perfect film to watch as we head towards Halloween, so we’d encourage everyone to come along and help us celebrate this amazing regional achievement while getting into the spooky spirit."

Following the screening, Mr Stainthorpe, Ms Chong, and other members of the production team will take part in a Q&A session.

Tickets are available for £10, or £8 for concessions, and can be purchased through the Gala Durham website at galadurham.co.uk.
