Globally-acclaimed artist brings woodland-inspired exhibition to North East doorstep

North East land artist James Brunt unveils Home exhibition at Kirkleatham Walled Garden, inspired by local woodland, from October 17 to mid-December.

A North East artist whose striking creations have taken him from Taiwan to the United States has unveiled an exhibition inspired by something much closer to home – the woodland on his doorstep.

James Brunt, a land artist based in Kirkleatham, Redcar, began his latest project the day after moving to the village on December 2, 2025.

This new body of work, titled Home, will be on display at the Bothy Gallery in Kirkleatham Walled Garden from October 17, and is rooted in the surrounding landscape.

Mr Brunt said: "This is such an exciting opportunity for me, this is a body of work that nobody asked me to do, so the works are as close to my own creative practice as possible.

"This is what I do when left to my own devices, just me, the landscape around me and wildlife that I share the space with, deeply connected to the natural world."

His work, created in harmony with the seasons, explores the textures and materials of the woodland, often using fallen branches, leaves, and other natural elements to form temporary installations.

Mr Brunt has previously completed commissions for ITV, HBO, and international events in Taiwan, the United States, and Spain.

He is also known for large-scale public pieces in Knowsley, Ashington, and Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire.

Hazel Robinson, who works at Kirkleatham Walled Garden, said: "We are so proud to be able to host James’ exhibition ‘Home’ at the walled garden.

"Its a real celebration of work set in the heart of Kirkleatham.
