A County Durham man must pay compensation after admitting he stole laundry pods and groceries from supermarkets in Stanley.

Colin Lowery, 39, of Elm Street, Stanley, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on October 12, 2026.

He admitted three shoplifting offences in Stanley during June and July 2026.

On June 24, Lowery stole butter and meat from Asda, but their value was not established.

He stole £97 worth of laundry pods from Aldi in Stanley on July 6, then £90 worth of chicken and mince from the same store three days later.

Lowery was ordered to pay Aldi £97 for the laundry pods and £45 for the chicken and mince, and the court said the theft was a joint enterprise.

The court imposed no separate penalty for the Asda theft because the value of the goods was unknown.

The court took Lowery’s guilty pleas into account when sentencing him.
