Plans for a new chippy in Yarm from the bosses of Tomahawk Steakhouse have been scrapped.
The chain first announced plans to transform the former Pollo takeaway into a new traditional fish and chip shop in 2024 following the closure of the town’s last chippy Barnacles.
Work even got underway on the inside of the shop - with the firm even securing the vintage name from the owner of the old Yarm Fisheries, which dates back to the 1970s.
Bosses even said they were looking to bring back the vinegar from Cecil Wren, who owned the vinegar factory in Yarm which last operated in the early 1970s.
However, the plans were knocked back last year when Stockton Borough Council rejected retrospective planning permission and listed building consent to install a ventilation flue.
At the time, the council argued plans did not provide enough information on why the flue would not negatively impact on the area, branding the design as “obtrusive”.
Then, owner Howard Eggleston described it as a “knock back” and instead ensured the nearby Tomahawk restaurant at Fairfax Court served those looking for their fish and chip fix.
But now, Mr Eggleston has confirmed that the chippy is sadly no longer going ahead.
Instead, a new business has since taken on the unit, with works underway on Nude, an exciting modern wellness café and lifestyle brand.
However, despite the chippy not moving forward, it remains an exciting time for Tomahawk in Yarm as it prepares to move upstairs and fuse with Spanish tapas spot La Terraza.

La Terraza has gone from strength to strength since opening last October and will relaunch on October 19 when it merges with Tomahawk.

Meanwhile, Thai restaurant Little Lotus, which is run by Mr Eggleston’s children, will be rebranding to the Lotus Lounge and moving into the first floor of Tomahawk.
The firm had been based at the Sunningdale shops in Eaglescliffe since October 2024 but closed in August ahead of a teased relocation.
The Tomahawk news also follows the launch of the new Brasserie restaurant at Acklam Hall, which is being run by the firm at the Grade I Listed building.
