Libraries across North Yorkshire will host free events to help residents build their digital skills, access online services and learn how to stay safe from scams during Get Online Week.
The national initiative runs from Monday 19 October to Sunday 25 October, with more than 20 libraries taking part in Appy Day on Friday 23 October.
Library staff and volunteers will help residents learn how to use the North Yorkshire Library App, which allows users to renew and reserve books, manage family accounts, receive collection alerts and search the library catalogue.
The app also provides access to eBooks, eAudiobooks, newspapers and magazines, alongside practical services such as computer booking and printing.
The events will highlight the support available from volunteer IT buddies, who help people develop the digital skills needed to carry out everyday tasks independently.
Libraries are also working with North Yorkshire Police’s Cybercrime Unit and Yorkshire Building Society to hold drop-in sessions raising awareness of scams and online safety.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture and arts, Cllr Simon Myers, said libraries helped residents access essential online services, including booking medical appointments, paying bills and applying for jobs.
Cllr Simon Myers, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture and arts, said: We want to be a welcoming place where people can be shown how to navigate the online world, whether they are new to technology or want to expand on their knowledge.
Residents are being encouraged to check what activities are available at their local library during the week.
Donate unwanted devices
Get Online Week will also promote Reboot North Yorkshire, the council’s recycling project, which redistributes unwanted digital devices to people who lack the equipment needed to get online.
Last year, the programme recycled and distributed around 900 devices in partnership with community organisations.
Unwanted devices can be donated at any North Yorkshire library.
