Community wins planning battle to bring new modern BMX facilities to Pateley Bridge

Community volunteers in Pateley Bridge have won their push to secure a new state of the art bicycle pump track for the town.

The bid for a purpose-built asphalt pump track at Millennium Green has officially received planning permission from North Yorkshire Council.

The asphalt pump track project has been developed with Pateley Bridge Town Council and North Yorkshire Sport.

The initiative has also received the backing of the Sport England Movement Fund, and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority with support from Mayor David Skaith.

Pateley Bridge Town Council is also contributing towards the overall costs of the project.

The new modern facility will replace the existing BMX track at Millennium Green with a new purpose-built pump track designed to cater for everyone from beginners to experienced riders.

The community-led scheme at Millennium Green will see the construction of a hard-surfaced facility suitable for bikes, scooters and skateboards, which supporters hope will become one of the best pump tracks in North Yorkshire.

The track will be approximately 110m to 120m long and the straights will be at least two metres wide.

The clockwise circuit will include a range of banked corners, known as berms, and rollers, with lower and more gradual features designed to allow less experienced users to build up their skills safely.

Designers say shallow slopes and access paths have deliberately been included in the plans to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment and reduce the risk of falls.

Millennium Green was established in 1999 as part of the nationwide Millennium Greens initiative created to mark the turn of the millennium.

Pateley Bridge Town Council has served as the sole managing trustee of the Pateley Bridge Millennium Green Trust since 2010, when the original trustees formally passed on their responsibilities.
