Emotional anniversary surprise as Harrogate couple return to church where they married 64 years ago

A Harrogate couple marked an unforgettable wedding anniversary with an emotional return to the church where they first exchanged vows 64 years ago.

Val and Ken Backett were married at Christ Church in Harrogate, at 1pm on September 29, 1962.

Exactly 64 years later, on September 29, 2026, the couple were walking to the same church to attend Dementia Forward's weekly Time Together Tuesday cafe when they realised the significance of the moment.

As they approached the church, Val suddenly noticed the time.

"It was exactly 1pm," she said – the very moment she had arrived to marry Ken more than six decades earlier.

Ken reflected on the remarkable milestone, saying: "It feels like five minutes ago."

After sharing the story with the Dementia Forward team, what followed became an anniversary celebration neither of them had expected.

Tina, who runs the Time Together Tuesday wellbeing cafe, announced the special occasion to everyone gathered before playing Cliff Richard's Congratulations.

Val and Ken took to the floor for an impromptu dance, leaving fellow cafe members visibly moved.

"There wasn't a dry eye in the building," said those present.

The surprises did not end there.

The churchwarden kindly opened up the church and switched on the lights, inviting the couple inside.

Together, they walked once more down the aisle where they had begun married life all those years before, creating a poignant full-circle moment.

Val and Ken's love story began in Harrogate when they met at a dance at the Lounge Hall, now the town's Wetherspoons pub.

Val was 18 and Ken was 17 when they first met.

They married when they were both 20, with Val jokingly insisting Ken wait until after his birthday so they would be the same age on their wedding day.

Adding another touching link to the past, their original wedding photographs were published in the Harrogate Herald in 1962.

More than six decades later, new photographs capturing their anniversary return to Christ Church will once again celebrate their enduring love story.

The Time Together Tuesday cafe, organised by Dementia Forward, takes place every Tuesday from 1pm at Christ Church, offering people living with dementia and their loved ones an opportunity to enjoy activities, companionship and support in a welcoming environment.
