York park transformed with eye-catching 'Lion Cage' addition

"The Lion Cage" officially opens this Saturday (October 17) thanks to major improvements from London-based basketball and streetwear brand Half Decent Day (HDD) and court surface specialists SC Sports in collaboration with City of York Council.

A REFURBISHED basketball court is bringing a fresh burst of energy to a York park.

Located in Hull Road Park in Millfield Avenue, and named "The Lion Cage," the court officially opens this Saturday (October 17) with major improvements from London-based basketball and streetwear brand Half Decent Day (HDD) and court surface specialists SC Sports in collaboration with City of York Council.

The refurbishment was delivered free of charge by HDD and SC Sports as part of their mission to create inviting public spaces that reflect local identity and encourage community use.

Sam Sure from HDD said the collaboration between his company and SC Sports was driven in part by a need to improve outdoor facilities which can hold back the growth of the sport in a city with a "good and engaged basketball community."

Bosses at HDD said the court features a design inspired by the park’s Victorian lion head sculpture, connecting the space to its history while providing a modern, vibrant playing environment.

City of York Council funded upgrades to the basketball hoops and backboards and said "the transformation has created one of York's most eye-catching spaces."

Ward councillor Anna Baxter, who represents Hull Road, said: "The new basketball court artwork looks fantastic and is a brilliant addition to the park.

"We’re incredibly grateful to Half Decent Day and SC Sports for their generosity, creativity and hard work in making this happen for our community at no cost to the council.

"It has breathed new life into the court, and we hope it will encourage even more people of all ages to come down, enjoy the space and play basketball."

Ian Hoult, head of environmental services at City of York Council, said: "We're delighted to have worked alongside Half Decent Day and SC Sports on this exciting community project.

"The refurbishment has transformed the court into a vibrant and welcoming space that celebrates the character and history of Hull Road Park.

"By helping to improve the basketball facilities, we're supporting opportunities for local people to be active, connect with others and enjoy their local green spaces."

“This project is part of wider investment in Hull Road Park, helping to enhance facilities and create a space that residents can be proud of."

The Lion Cage officially opens this Saturday, 17th October with three-by-three competitions, shootouts and prizes set to take place.
