AN EYEWITNESS has told how she stumbled across the large emergency response at a secluded North Yorkshire bay where a body was found this morning.

Victoria Richards lives near Cornelian Bay, and saw numerous emergency response vehicles in the cliff-top car park on her walk to the beach.

She said it was an unusual sight in the remote spot, which is south of Scarborough between the headlands of White Nab and Knipe Point, but there was no indication of where they had gone from there.

Victoria told The Press she was then surprised to see police, coastguard and ambulance crews on the beach where she learnt that a body had been discovered.

North Yorkshire Police asked people to avoid the area earlier today before confirming that a body had been found and recovered at Cornelian Bay this morning.

A spokesperson said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of a body recovered from Cornelian Bay.

"At this early stage, there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death."

Victoria said: “It is very sad. It is a very peaceful spot and very quiet.

"I often go walking down there and usually see the odd person, a dog walker or a couple of people, but it is generally always quiet.

"There’s the footpath that goes along the cliff top, but to get down to the beach you have to almost scramble down, and you have to access the beach at low tide.

"I went down for a walk this morning. There were three police vans, three ambulance vehicles and two coastguard vehicles all in the little car park which is set back away from the beach.

"From there they could have gone in any direction and I wasn’t sure where they had gone.

"I carried on walking down and then realised they were in front of me on the beach.”

Victoria said she spoke to another person on the sands who told her that a woman’s body had been found.

“I moved here earlier this year to live close to the beach but I grew up in the area and haven’t known this happen before. It is unusual and very sad.”

Unaware of how or when the body had been discovered, Victoria said the area was a place where people went to walk or sit as dolphins are sighted off that stretch of the North Yorkshire coast, while some people also swim there.

However, she added: “At Cornelian Bay you have to know the tides because you get cut off and often there’s no other people around. You would need to be a very sure of what you were doing if you go there – but people do.”
