Shelves stripped bare in former flagship York store – as Post Office closes today

One of the stalwarts of York shopping is being emptied out as it enters its final few days.

TG Jones, better known as the former WH Smith on Coney Street, has been trading for decades but closes for good on Monday.

And today (Wednesday, 14 October) is the final day that the Post Office at the back of the store is operational.

That will leave the city centre served by just two small post offices, on Colliergate and Micklegate.

The self-service parcel machines have already been removed from the branch at the back of the ground floor ahead of its full closure.

In TG Jones itself, the closing down sale discounts have reached 60% as it enters its last five days.

There is no stock left on the first floor, which used to house the book section. The only things that are for sale are fixtures and fittings, including a two-seater sofa for £40.

The back of the ground floor is full of empty shelves, but there’s still stationery, books, confectionery and other items at the front .

More fittings are on sale too, including product display gondolas for £100 and blue chairs for £10.

TG Jones took over the Coney Street WH Smith in 2025.

Then in July, TG Jones secured court approval for a major restructuring, which it said would lead to the closure of around 150 stores and hit hundreds of jobs.

The Post Office has been advertising for a new retail partner to run its main York branch, which moved to WH Smith from its Lendal HQ in 2019.

That advert has now been taken down, sparking hopes that someone has come forward to take it on.

A Post Office spokesperson told YorkMix in September that it can take around six months to open a replacement branch.
