A much-loved Italian restaurant that served Durham city centre for more than 30 years is making a comeback with a fresh twist.

Emilio's, a familiar name to generations of Durham diners, will return to its former home at 96 Elvet Bridge after Notch Americano closes.

The same family is bringing back the restaurant, with Emilio Arceri and Dan Stafford confirming the news in an emotional social media announcement.

The comeback comes weeks after Notch Americano announced it would close on November 1, blaming rising energy and ingredient costs and wider hospitality pressures.

The closure will now make way for Emilio's, a name sure to revive memories for Durham diners.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Emilio and Dan said: "Some things are just meant to come back.

They added: "First off, a huge thank you for all the messages and support since announcing the closure of Notch Americano.

"We really do have such an amazing community here in Durham, and we can't thank you enough for your continued support.

"We feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to bring back Emilio's, a much-loved family-run restaurant that was part of Durham for over 30 years, but with a fresh new twist!"

The family will revive a restaurant name with a long Durham history rather than leave the hospitality industry.

Details of the new-look Emilio's are still under wraps.

Notch Americano said rising operating costs made it hard to continue and the restaurant will close on November 1.

At the time, the owners said: "With the continued pressures facing our restaurant and hospitality industry from the cost of living to rising energy bills and the increasing cost of ingredients at Notch, we've made the difficult decision that it's time to close this chapter."

However, they hinted that another venture could be on the horizon, telling customers: "As one door closes, another one opens, so stay tuned.

"We're really hoping to have some good news to share with you very soon."
