A hidden Northumberland gem is attracting cake lovers from across the country with its eye-catching patisserie, handmade pastries and fruit-inspired desserts.

Grant’s Bakery in Corbridge has built a reputation for its impressive displays of sweet treats.

It has everything from colourful cakes and delicate pastries to its much-talked-about peach melba and strawberry tart.

The independent bakery, which has been inundated with five-star reviews, sits at 1-3 Market Place in the heart of the historic village.

Its windows offer a tempting glimpse of the creations waiting inside.

Its roots stretch back more than three decades, with owner Andrew Cotterell setting up his first patisserie in 1991 before later establishing the traditional bakery in Corbridge.

For visitors, part of the appeal is the sheer variety on display, with traditional bakery favourites sitting alongside more elaborate continental-style patisserie.

Among the quirky treats on offer, is this creamy white chocolate mousse with a peach compote centre, coated in white chocolate on a chocolate shortbread biscuit - all disguised as a peach.

Another eye-catcher is their chocolate cup, filled with a cream cheese filling and layers of coffee-soaked sponge, topped with a chocolate lid.

One reviewer described the Peach Melba as the biggest they had ever eaten, while another praised the strawberry tart for its creamy filling, sweet strawberries and crisp base.

The bakery’s fruit-inspired creations have become a particular talking point, with Tripadvisor reviewers mentioning the desserts when recommending a visit.

But Grant’s is far more than a destination for people with a sweet tooth.

Its range also includes rustic breads, sourdough, sausage rolls, quiches, savoury pastries, sandwiches and other freshly made lunch options.

Customers have singled out its cheese scones, cinnamon whirls and sausage rolls, while the bakery also offers cakes such as carrot cake, brownies, lemon drizzle and cherry frangipane tart.

The business has won national recognition for its baking, being named Craft Bakery Business of the Year at the 2025 Baking Industry Awards.

It previously won the same title in 2020, underlining its standing in the UK’s craft baking industry.

At the heart of the bakery is master baker Andrew Cotterell, whose previous experience includes prestigious kitchens and venues such as Gleneagles Hotel and Grosvenor House.

The bakery also says its products are made with a commitment to traditional craft skills, quality ingredients and local suppliers.

Its appeal is reflected in customer feedback, with Tripadvisor awarding Grant’s a Travellers’ Choice award for 2026.

One visitor described it as a “little goldmine”, praising the huge selection of cakes and savouries, while another called it a “feast for the eyes” because of the variety of breads, bakes and patisserie.

A separate reviewer described the bakery as a place worth making a special trip for, praising the quality of its food and the choice available.
