North East schoolchildren have become the faces of a new campaign video promoting their town's bid to be named UK City of Culture 2029.

Newport Primary School pupils share their hopes for the future and what they love about Middlesbrough.

The film is at the heart of Middlesbrough’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029.

Middlesbrough Council’s deputy mayor and culture lead, Cllr Philippa Storey, said: "It’s a fantastic film and I was quite moved when I watched it.

"The pupils from Newport really do steal the show.

"The video sums up Middlesbrough’s character so well and really shows off our culture of community that’s at the heart of our bid to become UK City of Culture."

A poem the children created with local writer Bob Beagrie features in Middlesbrough’s bid.

The film also features local writer Bob Beagrie, Taste of Africa founder Sade Sangowawa and Creative Factory executive director Anna Byrne.

They reflect on Middlesbrough’s history as the "biggest boomtown in the Victorian age" and the passions that keep the town moving.

The film celebrates Middlesbrough’s "undercover artists" and "hard-nosed" character before ending with a triumphant "Up the Boro!"

The title comes with a £10m government prize, while previous winners saw huge increases in investment and visitor numbers.

Middlesbrough was longlisted in March, with the shortlist due this month.

The film is available on Middlesbrough Council’s YouTube channel.
