Hillhouse Group has opened a £5 million asphalt plant in Midlothian, bringing its asphalt production operations to the east of Scotland for the first time in its 119-year history.
The Edinburgh Asphalt facility at Soutra Mains Quarry began production in October and will supply customers across Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Scottish Borders and the wider east of Scotland.

The investment forms part of the group’s long-term strategy to strengthen its operations, diversify its business and expand its supply chain across Scotland, following its acquisition of the Skene Group Construction Services site in 2024.
The new plant will provide a locally produced supply of asphalt, helping reduce lead times and improve flexibility for infrastructure and development projects across the region.
It complements the existing Soutra Mains Quarry operation, which supplies aggregates, ready-mix concrete and concrete blocks. The addition of asphalt production means the site now operates as a full-service construction materials hub.
The facility can produce more than 50 different asphalt mixes, manufactured to industry standards including CPR certification and BS EN 13108. All finished products carry UKCA marking.
Access to the A68 corridor also puts the plant in a position to serve customers across the east of Scotland.

Mark Munro, managing director of Hillhouse Quarry, said: "The opening of Edinburgh Asphalt is a significant milestone for the team at Soutra Mains and the wider Hillhouse business, and it has been fantastic to see production get underway.
"We already have a strong operation at Soutra Mains and asphalt is a natural extension of that capability.
"Customers can now access a locally produced, quality-assured supply, supported by an experienced team and the service they have come to expect from Hillhouse Quarry.
"Our location, with access to the A68 corridor, puts us in a strong position to serve customers across Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Scottish Borders and the wider east of Scotland."
