Killinghall Village Hall completes £27,000 energy efficiency upgrade

Killinghall Village Hall has completed a £27,018 energy efficiency improvement project designed to reduce running costs and carbon emissions, with the investment supported by a National Lottery grant.

The project, delivered by Harrogate-based Energy Oasis, includes solar panels, intelligent LED lighting, destratification fans and upgrades to the hall’s emergency lighting.

The improvements are expected to generate annual savings of £2,493.44 from the LED lighting and solar photovoltaic (PV) system alone, alongside a combined estimated reduction of 2.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Projected savings of almost £2,500 a year

Figures provided by Energy Oasis estimate that the intelligent LED lighting will save the hall £1,482.36 a year, reducing carbon emissions by 1.6 tonnes annually.

The solar PV installation is expected to save a further £1,011.08 annually and reduce emissions by 1.2 tonnes.

Together, the two measures are projected to save £2,493.44 a year and cut carbon emissions by 2.8 tonnes.

Energy Oasis estimates that the project will take six years to break even when all aspects of the investment are taken into account.

The installation of destratification fans is also intended to improve energy efficiency. These fans circulate warm air that can otherwise accumulate near the ceiling, helping distribute heat more evenly throughout the building.

Energy Oasis said such systems can typically reduce gas bills by around 25%, although it was unable to provide a specific estimate for the savings at Killinghall Village Hall.

Lottery funding supports community facility

The project was funded through a National Lottery grant applied for by Killinghall Village Hall.

The improvements are intended to help the community facility manage its energy costs and make its running expenses more sustainable over the longer term.

The official handover took place on Friday 2 October, following a rearrangement of the original date.

Energy Oasis said the work was completed as part of efforts to help community buildings become more resilient to rising and unpredictable energy costs.

The projected savings are estimates supplied by Energy Oasis; actual savings will depend on energy use, tariffs and the performance of the installed equipment.
