A HORNED, mythical creature from Alpine folklore is set to descend on York next month.

York’s first-ever official Krampus Run will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2026 - bringing the dark legend of Krampus to life in the city centre.

The Krampus, a fearsome, horned being from Alpine myth, is said to punish naughty children during the festive season, in contrast to the gift-giving St Nicholas.

A spokesperson for Krampus Yorkshire said: "This winter, the historic lanes of York will trade traditional holiday cheer for the dark magic of Alpine folklore.

"You will hear the bells before you see them. While St Nicholas Claus rewards the well-behaved, Krampus—the legendary horn-headed creature of Alpine myth—comes looking for the naughty."

The procession will begin at the Black Swan on Peasholme Green at 10.30am and will follow a route through the city centre.

It will pause at Villians Rum at 11am and Valhalla at noon, before entering Minster Yard and returning to the starting point by 3pm.

The Krampus Run will feature participants dressed in elaborate, hand-crafted costumes including carved wooden masks, imposing horns, and heavy furs.

The spokesperson said: "Embrace the opportunity to meet & enjoy this spectacular, mythical spectacle up close as history and folklore collide.

"Witness the incredible artistry and creativity of the hand-crafted costumes, featuring intricately carved wooden masks, imposing horns, and heavy furs that bring these legendary beasts to life."

Last year, Krampus figures from the Whitby Krampus Run visited York - causing a stir at The Society of Alchemists on Shambles, where surprised onlookers watched the haunting procession.

As reported by The Press earlier this month, another parade will take place on Saturday, December 5, starting from the Bandstand in Whitby at 3.30pm and marching through the town centre to the Captain Cook Monument for the finale.

Krampus runs have grown in popularity across Europe and beyond as a way to celebrate the darker side of festive folklore.

The York event promises a unique blend of history, myth, and spectacle and offers an alternative take on the festive season for those who enjoy the spookier side of Christmas.
