A POPULAR York city centre eatery has reopened its doors with a fresh new look and new offerings that hope to 'broaden what British food brings to the table'.

The York Roast Co’s Low Petergate branch reopened on Monday (October 12) with a fresh look and a new and improved menu with new 'playful' takes on the Great British Roast Dinner.

The shop closed its doors on September 7, with a social media post made prior to the closure saying that it will “work on something exciting behind the scenes".

Some of the changes made include new additions to the menu - including improved gravy, dirty roasties, loaded fries, and toasties - along with a refreshed interior and fresh seating area.

Stephen Chadwick, managing director of York Roast Co, said: "We believe it’s time to broaden what British food brings to the table when it comes to the world of fast food.

"We know there’s a risk in taking a few liberties with a dish that’s nothing short of a national institution but, as our YorkyPud Wrap proved, it’s in our DNA to break the rules a bit and show our love for the roast in bold, creative ways.

"It’s all about bringing a whopping great helping of fun to this majestic meal that hasn’t changed in forever. Who says roasts are just for Sundays, anyway?"

The York-based family business, which has operated in the city for more than 20 years, gained international attention in 2017 with its viral YorkyPud Wrap.

The relaunch hopes to bring about a new brand ethos, 'A Different Gravy,' which aims to set a benchmark for quality while promising customers a more playful and innovative approach to the classic roast.

The refreshed brand identity has been developed in collaboration with Friends of Mine Studio Ltd, covering everything from brand strategy to menus, website, and staff uniforms.

The updated menu was created with the help of Egg Soldiers, an award-winning food consultancy that has previously worked with brands like Leon, Nandos, and Tortilla.

Restaurant interiors have been redesigned by o1Creative, a specialist design and installation company whose clients include Harrods and Selfridges.

Stephen added: "The roast, as a meal, has always been about family and we think of ourselves as a modern era family business – one that sets a place at the table for everyone who plays a part in driving our success. They’re regarded as family too.

"So, we no longer call ourselves just a family business, this new chapter for the York Roast Co marks the point where we become an Extended Family Business."

The relaunch begins in York, with the flagship Low Petergate store reopening on October 12, 2026, with further works planned for the Stonegate and Chester locations in 2027.

The new menu will also be available for delivery through Deliveroo.
