A new research facility could be coming to York under plans lodged with the council.

The application would see an IT Centre at the University of York's Campus West converted into a facility for its School of Physics, Engineering and Technology (SPET).

Plans stated the development would meet the need for a specialist teaching, research and support facility for the school.

They added it would feature laboratories, research and project spaces, staff accommodation, student collaboration areas and associated support facilities.

The application lodged with York Council would see the three-storey building, in Innovation Way, Heslington, refurbished to house the facility.

It would house laboratories, specialist audio teaching, shared offices, along with meeting, welfare and support facilities.

Physics teaching, optics and nuclear laboratories are also planned, as well as space for engineering projects, robotics and electronics teaching and 3D printing and chemical laboratories.

Two experimental platforms would be put on the building's roof along with solar panels, with controlled technical and maintenance access.

Plans stated the university needed a space that would better support practical learning, specialist equipment and students' experiences.

They stated: "The proposal sustains educational and research activity within an established university and business setting, supporting collaboration and York's knowledge economy.

"The IT Centre remodel will meet a defined need for specialist SPET teaching, research and support accommodation through reuse of an existing University building."
