York Hospital has said it is supporting staff affected by a young man falling from a second-floor window at the site.
North Yorkshire Police said the man has been left with serious injuries after the fall at about 5.30pm on Saturday (October 10).
A spokesperson for the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs York Hospital, said it is assisting North Yorkshire Police with its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Our thoughts are with the individual and those close to him, and we are supporting colleagues affected by the incident,” a trust spokesperson said.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said officers were with the man before he fell from the window so the force has made a mandatory referral to the police watchdog over the incident.
They said the man sustained serious injuries after the fall and has since received further treatment in hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the incident involved a young man who was accompanied at the hospital by police officers.
The North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “A full investigation is underway to establish the circumstances prior to the incident.
“As police officers were present at the hospital at the time of the incident and there had been previous police contact with the individual, North Yorkshire Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).”
It is understood the man landed in a bush after falling from the building.
