A York bakery that has grown from a home-based pandemic project into a popular food business has been crowned Independent Bakery of the Year.
Bar Hashery Bakery took the title after impressing judges with its remarkable growth story, outstanding baked goods and commitment to creating welcoming community spaces across the city.
The accolade was unveiled at The Press Food and Drink Awards 2026 which were held at the National Railway Museum. The awards celebrate the outstanding talent, flavour and creativity that make York and surrounding area one of the UK’s most exciting food and drink destinations.
Founded four years ago by Jolanta Labutyte and Prafful Jha, Bar Hashery has rapidly become one of York’s independent success stories.
What started with baking from home has evolved into a thriving multi-site business with five locations across York, including Bootham, Parliament Street, Micklegate, York Railway Station and its newest venue at Layerthorpe.
Judges praised the bakery for combining exceptional products with innovation and a strong sense of community. The newest Layerthorpe bakery and café has become a major milestone for the business, featuring a spacious central kitchen that supports both its growing retail operation and wholesale ambitions.
The new venue quickly established itself as a welcoming hub for locals. Designed with families in mind, it features large shared tables, space for prams and a dedicated children’s play area, creating an inclusive environment where people can meet, relax and enjoy freshly-baked pastries and expertly-crafted coffee.
The award also recognises the passion and determination that have driven the bakery’s rapid expansion. Despite its growth, Bar Hashery has remained true to its founding values of quality, creativity and customer care.

Judges highlighted the investment in people as a key factor in its success. Now with a team of 26 employees, staff are encouraged to develop their skills and play an active role in shaping the future of the business.
The overwhelming response to the Layerthorpe opening demonstrated the strength of the Bar Hashery brand and the affection customers have for the business.
Judges said the winner exemplifies the best of independent enterprise, combining outstanding products, ambitious growth and genuine community spirit. The award celebrates not only a flourishing bakery, but a business that has become an integral part of York’s food and hospitality scene.
