A man has denied wounding a cyclist in York city centre with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm last July.

Gary Smithies, 37, also denied threatening the cyclist with a knife on the same occasion.

He was appearing before York Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

Smithies, of no fixed address, was charged following an incident in Museum Street close to Museum Gardens in the early evening of July 23.

His trial will begin at York Crown Court on January 12 and is expected to last for three days.

He was remanded in custody until then at the end of the short hearing.
