Garden village with 3,339 homes planned at former York airfield

A new garden village with almost 3,400 homes could be built at a former airfield in York, with people urged to have their say.

A consultation has launched on plans for Langwith Village which would be built at the former Elvington Airfield near the Yorkshire Air Museum.

The new settlement would also feature new schools, shops, community and leisure facilities and workplaces and active travel infrastructure, according to its website.

Chris Procter, of the Langwith Development Partnership, said the consultation which starts this month would be an opportunity for residents, businesses and organisations to shape the plans prior to submission.

It comes ahead of consultation materials being made available on the development’s website from Monday, 19 October until Monday, 30 November.

An in-person event is also set to be held at the Yorkshire Air Museum’s Halifax Suite from 2.30pm to 7.30pm on Tuesday, 20 October.

Those attending will be able to view the current plans, speak to people working on the project and ask questions.

The site of the proposed village, in Elvington, is in York Council’s Local Plan which sets out where development is due to take place in the coming years.

Council officials are currently working on updating the Local Plan following national planning policy changes, with a call for sites open until December.

The masterplan for the new Langwith Village, featuring 3,339 homes, has been drawn up by following engagement with stakeholders and the local community.

Langwith Development Partnership has worked with the council and Homes England on the plans.

Workshops have been held in an effort to find out what matters most to the local community and how that can be applied to the plans.

People have been asked to share their views so they can be taken into account before the plans are finalised and submitted.

Langwith Development Partnership’s Mr Proctor said they were now keen to hear from an ever-wider audience.

Mr Proctor said: “After a period of sustained engagement with key stakeholders and community representatives, we are pleased to be launching this public consultation and inviting local residents, businesses and community organisations to help shape the next stage of the proposals for Langwith Village.

“The masterplan has been informed by a wide-ranging programme of technical assessment, alongside a series of consultation and design workshops, which have helped us better understand the priorities and aspirations of local communities and stakeholders.

“This consultation is an opportunity for residents, businesses and organisations to review the emerging proposals, understand how earlier feedback has influenced the masterplan, and help shape the future of Langwith Village ahead of the submission of an outline planning application.”
