Two charming places 30 miles from Bradford perfect for a chilled-out 'quietcation'

A quiet retreat might not be as far away as you think.

The Yorkshire Dales has long been a popular retreat for Bradfordians keen to escape from the hustle and bustle of life in the metropolis.

Now, a new study has pinpointed two character-filler locations about 30 miles from Bradford that are among the best in Yorkshire for a quiet break.

Settle and Grassington have been named among the most peaceful destinations for a 'quietcation' in Yorkshire and the Humber, according to new research by LNER.

The study ranked UK locations based on population density, air quality, dark-sky conditions, access to green and blue spaces, nature designations, and the number of quiet activities such as tea rooms, bookshops and walking trails.

Accessibility was also factored in, with each destination given a final score out of 100.

David Flesher, commercial director at LNER, said: "We all need a break every now and then, whether that's a weekend away from the emails, the traffic and the everyday noise, or just a change of scenery for a few days.

"That's really what this research is about: a guide to some of the UK's most peaceful towns and cities, plenty of which are easily reached by train."

Settle topped the regional list with a score of 63.7 out of 100, offering 10.92 hectares of green space and 2.41 hectares of blue space.

It also boasts four nearby nature designations and 119 walking trails.

Robin Hood’s Bay came second with a score of 55.

It was recognised for having the lowest population and density, the highest peace score, and the darkest skies among the top destinations.

The coastal village also offers 74 walking trails.

Grassington took third place with 54.1 points, recording the cleanest air of all the destinations studied in Yorkshire and the Humber.

It offers 147 walking trails, the highest among the top destinations, along with one bookshop, one nature designation and 0.8 hectares of blue space.

Mr Flesher said: "It shows that real peace and quiet isn't hard to find.

"Dark skies above the Yorkshire Dales, ancient pine forests in the Cairngorms, sleepy coastal towns and market squares, the UK has some wonderful landscapes waiting to be discovered."
