ON this day last year, the refurbishment of the Kirkgate Centre in Shipley was celebrated as it was judged the best new community building in the region.
The Shipley Sustainable Community Hub, born from a major refurbishment of the historic building, was announced a regional winner at the Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards in the Best Public or Community building category.
This accolade positioned it for consideration in a national award.
The year-long renovation, funded through the Shipley Towns Fund, transformed the pre-1900 structure into a modern hub for charitable organisations Hive and the Kirkgate Community Centre.
Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Transport and Planning, Cllr Alex Ross-Shaw, said: "The users of the building were always at the heart of the project... It was important to maintain the heritage of the building but future-proof it for generations to come."
The project, costing £3 million, included £2.51 million from the Government-funded Shipley Towns Fund.
