Christmas Star Appeal returns to honour loved ones and support worthy causes

The Telegraph & Argus Christmas Star Appeal is returning for 2026.

This will give people across the Bradford district the chance to pay tribute to someone special while raising money for the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

The annual appeal invites residents to nominate a friend, family member, colleague or community figure as their Christmas Star.

In return for a £5 donation, a personalised star bearing their name will be hung on the Christmas tree at Bradford City Hall.

All proceeds will go towards this year's Lord Mayor's Appeal, which is supporting Down Syndrome Training & Support, Bradford Sea Cadets and the Nebula girls group.

The appeal has been launched by Lord Mayor Cllr Chris Herd, who has already chosen his own Christmas Star.

He said: "I have chosen Cllr Russell Brown as my star. He was a long-standing councillor for over 15 years and a very good friend. He also mentored me in my younger days as a councillor.

"I chose him because I thought he did a lot for other people over the years across Keighley and Worth Valley. He was the longest-serving councillor in my group and deserves recognition for that."

People taking part can nominate anyone they feel deserves recognition, whether they are celebrating a loved one, remembering someone no longer with them, or simply thanking a person who has made a difference to their lives.

Those who purchase a star will be invited to a special Christmas Stars Evening at Bradford City Hall on Wednesday, December 2.

Guests will be welcomed by Cllr Herd and Lady Mayoress Linda Herd, enjoy seasonal refreshments and see their stars displayed on the City Hall Christmas tree, with entertainment provided by the Thornton Community Choir.

Young people from the Bradford Sea Cadets will also help hang the stars on the tree.

To take part, supporters should complete a Christmas Star coupon and make a £5 donation to the Lord Mayor's Appeal.

Applications must be received by November 30.

The Christmas Star Appeal has become a festive tradition in Bradford, combining remembrance, recognition and community spirit while helping local charities and organisations continue their work throughout the district.
