A pensioner has died after being hit by a car in Gateshead.

Emergency services were called to Wealcroft, near the Staneway junction in Leam Lane, shortly after 4.45pm on Monday after a blue Volvo S40 hit a pedestrian.

The man, in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, Northumbria Police said.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

A force spokesperson said: "We’re looking to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage or CCTV of the moments leading up to the collision."
