A woman has died after a fight broke out on a bus in Hartlepool.

The woman, in her 60s, was on the number seven bus around 9.30am on Tuesday (October 13) when she was involved in an altercation with another woman.

Fellow passengers tried to break up the fight, police said, before the woman got off on York Road.

She died a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed, and a Home Office post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of her death.

A 26-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and remains in police custody.

A cordon remains in place outside the Coral Bookmakers on York Road and the bus has been removed as part of the investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector John Bonner, from Cleveland Police’s Homicide and Major Investigation Team, said: "We are in the early stages of the investigation to establish what took place before the woman died and to establish the cause of her death.

"I am therefore keen to hear from anyone who was on the number seven bus at the time and saw two women having an altercation or perhaps has footage and information on what took place.

"From footage reviewed so far we believe a number of passengers tried to break up the assault.
