A popular independent fashion brand has hinted at the opening of its first physical store in the North East, delighting shoppers across the region.

Lucy & Yak, known for its colourful dungarees and bold prints, is preparing to open a shop in Newcastle.

Previously, the closest shop for North East fashion enthusiasts was in Castleford's Yorkshire Outlet retail park, near Leeds.

The brand, which was founded in Barnsley by partners Lucy Greenwood and Chris Renwick, began in 2017 by selling tobacco pouches and dungarees on online marketplace Depop.

It has since has grown into a beloved fashion brand with stores across the UK's biggest cities and a customer base that stretches globally.

Recruitment is already underway for store manager and assistant manager roles in the city, though the exact opening date and location have not yet been announced.

The brand teased a new location on social media yesterday (October 12), asking their followers to guess where the newest shop would be.

Clues included iconic North East imagery: Ant and Dec, a Greggs sausage roll, and former X Factor judge Cheryl, prompting excitement from keen-eyed locals.

One commenter said it was "a reason to visit Newcastle."

Another wrote: "Wow, this could be bad for my bank account."

Local author and illustrator Ella Willis also took to the comments to share their thoughts, writing: "Oh my god? After years of asking? Newcastle?"

The Newcastle site will be Lucy & Yak’s first physical store in the North East when it opens. More details are set to be revealed soon.
