Glasgow City Council has received more than 10,000 reports of rat infestations so far this year, around 42 every day.

A freedom of information (FOI) request by The Herald shows that for the period from January to August, the local authority received 10,115 pest control requests.

Figures showing the tally of each ward show that Canal had the highest number of reports with 874 notifications received.

It was followed by East Centre (869) which takes in areas including Barlanark, Carntyne and Cranhill.

Residents and union representatives have attributed the crisis to delayed or missed bin collections, three-week waste cycles and budget or staffing pressures.

Glasgow City Council state that its pest control team actively treats reported infestations, though officials emphasis that proper containment of food waste and resident/landlord cooperation are essential to long term control.
