The Palace of Holyroodhouse will welcome visitors for the festive season with illuminated wildlife displays, decorated Christmas trees and events inspired by a medieval Scottish legend.

The King’s official residence in Edinburgh will open its Christmas programme from November 19, 2026, to January 4, 2027.

This year’s new display draws on King David I of Scotland, who is said to have encountered a stag with a glowing cross between its antlers while hunting in the 12th century.

According to the story, the king interpreted the vision as a message from God and built Holyrood Abbey on the spot. The abbey now stands in ruins within the palace grounds.

Visitors will be able to walk around the palace’s central quadrangle, where illuminated, life-size models of stags, does and fawns will bring the legend to life.

The palace façade, gates and forecourt fountain will also be illuminated each evening, creating a festive display at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Inside, a 15-foot Nordmann fir tree will take centre stage in the Great Gallery, while the Throne Room will feature two 12-foot Christmas trees, lights and ornaments.

Garlands, berries and winter foliage will decorate the Great Stair leading to the historic State Apartments, with wreaths adorning the windows along the King’s Rooms. The Royal Dining Room will also feature seasonal foliage and objects from the Royal Collection.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a festive menu at the Café at the Palace, located in the historic Mews courtyard.
