A famous Scottish fish and chip shop chain is expanding into England following a £1.5 million investment.

Blue Lagoon is launching a new 60-seat restaurant and takeaway in Newcastle on the edge of the city's Brigg Market on Friday, October 16.

The family-run business has a history spanning more than five decades.

Italian-born entrepreneur Ersilio Varese and childhood sweetheart Edda Varese opened the first Blue Lagoon Fish & Chip shop on Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street in 1975.

The Newcastle restaurant will become the chain's 17th location overall.

Explaining the decision to expand south of the border, Blue Lagoon director Simone Varese said: “I wanted to bring our family business to Newcastle. I have visited over the years, and, to me, Newcastle is a lot like Glasgow.

"They share the same elements, and Newcastle has a similar culture to Glasgow with shopping, football and nightlife – which are all vital to our business model.

"We want to bring some Glasgow delicacies to Newcastle: our black pudding, haggis and deep-fried pizza crunch.”
