Autumn colour arrives at Harlow Carr as garden prepares for seasonal event

RHS Garden Harlow Carr is displaying its autumn colours, with seasonal foliage, woodland walks and an autumn-themed programme of activities taking place from 16 to 18 October.

The Harrogate garden’s autumn display includes Japanese acers in shades of crimson and scarlet, golden woodland canopies and copper-coloured conifers. Ornamental grasses, late-flowering perennials, berries and seedheads also provide colour across the gardens.

Among the areas showing seasonal changes are the Sandstone Rock Garden, where colourful trees and shrubs line winding paths, and the area around the Lily Pond, where Japanese acers provide autumn foliage.

Trees around the Queen Mother’s Lake create reflections across the water, while the Woodland landscape offers walks beneath mature oak and beech trees. In the Arboretum, dawn redwoods develop bronze-orange foliage before shedding their needles.

Autumn Weekend activities

The garden’s Autumn Weekend runs from 16 to 18 October, with activities covering horticulture, homegrown produce and fungi.

The RHS Late Fruit and Vegetable Competition will feature more than 60 classes of produce, while the Northern Fruit Group Apple Display will showcase different apple varieties. Visitors can also bring homegrown apples for identification and advice from specialists.

Members of the Mid Yorkshire Fungus Group will lead guided fungus forays and host talks and question-and-answer sessions about fungi found in the garden.

The forays are scheduled for 11.30am and 1.30pm each day and cost £3 per person. Specialist talks by Jenny Sergeant are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 11am. Places on the forays are limited and require advance booking.

The event activities are included with normal garden admission, with free entry for RHS members.

Seasonal changes across the garden

Fiona Slight, Curator at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, said the changing colours brought a different character to the garden during autumn.

Fiona Slight, Curator at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, said:

Autumn truly is one of the most rewarding seasons at RHS Harlow Carr. The changing colours bring an entirely new character to the garden, from the vivid reds of the acers around the Sandstone Rock Garden to the golden canopies in the Woodland landscape and the beautiful reflections on the Queen Mother’s Lake.

There’s something different to discover every week, making it a wonderful time to slow down, enjoy nature and experience the garden in a completely new light.

RHS Garden Harlow Carr is located on Crag Lane, Beckwithshaw, near Harrogate.
