A 39-year-old man has been arrested "on suspicion of possessing a bladed article in a public place" in the centre of a North Yorkshire coastal town.

North Yorkshire Police said a "knife-related" incident took place outside the Iceland supermarket store in Vernon Road, Scarborough at 4.20pm yesterday (Monday, October 12).

The force said officers were first called 10 minutes earlier to reports of alleged threats being made near the Rotunda Museum in the same road.

No one was injured during the incident and police said in a statement this morning that the man remains in custody for questioning.

The force said it is appealing for witnesses, in particular two people - thought to be men - who were walking underneath Spa Bridge in the town at the time of the earlier incident.

A North Yorkshire Police statement of this morning said: "The suspect was quickly arrested and the knife recovered.

"An Alsatian-type dog that was with the suspect is being cared for by a relative.

"Witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV, dashcam or smartphone video footage of the incident are urged to get in touch to support the investigation.
