York's National Railway Museum launches photography contest for young people

Young people are being invited to capture images of their journeys for a national photography competition at the National Railway Museum.

Young people are being invited to capture images of their journeys for a national photography competition in York.

The National Railway Museum has launched the third Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition, open to UK residents aged 25 and under.

This year’s theme, The Journey and the Destination, encourages entrants to explore how railways connect people, places and communities.

Craig Bentley, director of the National Railway Museum, said: "Young Railway Photographer of the Year is all about encouraging creativity, curiosity and new perspectives on the railways.

"Whether you're photographing your daily journey, a family day out, a station close to home or a dramatic railway landscape, we want to see the world through your eyes."

For the first time, the competition includes a 12 and under category, allowing younger entrants to submit a single image instead of a full portfolio.

Winning photographs will go on display at the National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon throughout August 2027.

Entries will be judged in April 2027 by a panel of experts from photography, railways and the creative industries.

The competition opens on October 12, 2026, and closes on April 4, 2027.
