Three spine-chilling scares to get you ready for Halloween in York

It’s October, the perfect time to explore your spooky event options, and where better than York, one of Britain’s most haunted cities?

Here are some of the best adults-only events taking place, from ghost stories on a train to a deeper, darker side of the dungeons.

Hallowscream

If you are ready for the fright of your life, how about braving five different scare houses at Hallowscream?

Running to Sunday 1 November at the York Maze, Elvington Lane, the scare fest also comes with food and drink options at the Park Fodder Barn.

Dungeon Lates

If York’s long history, ghosts, ghouls, and highwaymen are your thing, how about attending the York Dungeon Lates?

The 18+ nights run every Saturday through October from 6.30 p.m., promising more scares and cheekier jokes.

Over an hour, you and your group will be led through the twisted tales of times gone by, with a scare guaranteed.

You may know the dungeons, but can you brave them in the darkness of the night?

Train scares

All aboard for a scare upon the North York Moors Railway.

Take lantern-lit Victorian carriages through the desolate moors with York’s most famous ghost, Mad Alice, and hear the stories that will chill you to the bone.

Also enjoy a complimentary York Gin and Tonic with every ticket; you might just need it to steady your nerves afterwards.

Running for just 3 evenings: 18 October, 25 October and 1 November 2026.
