TRIBUTES have been paid to a much-loved figure in the local amateur theatre community following the sudden death of Gary Holmes.

Mr Holmes died yesterday after becoming unwell outside Yeadon Town Hall Theatre, according to a statement issued by the venue.

Widely known to audiences as the theatre's Father Christmas and, before that, as a popular pantomime dame, Mr Holmes had been a familiar face at Yeadon Town Hall Theatre for many years, entertaining generations of theatre-goers.

The theatre described him as a cherished member of its family who brought "laughter, joy and a little magic" to audiences of all ages.

A passionate advocate for amateur dramatics, Mr Holmes was also heavily involved with the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), dedicating much of his life to supporting the performing arts. Away from the stage, he served his community for many years as a firefighter before retiring.

In a poignant twist, Mr Holmes had attended rehearsals for the theatre's forthcoming Christmas Spectacular on the morning of his death, something the theatre said he "absolutely adored being part of".

The statement added that when Mr Holmes became unwell outside the Town Hall, members of the theatre team immediately came to his assistance and did everything possible to help. Despite their efforts, he could not be saved.

Paying tribute, Yeadon Town Hall Theatre said: "Gary gave so much to theatre, to his community and to everyone around him. His warmth, enthusiasm and unmistakable sense of fun will be sorely missed."

The theatre extended its condolences to Mr Holmes' wife Sally, his two daughters, wider family, friends and colleagues throughout the amateur theatre community.

The tribute concluded: "Thank you, Gary, for the laughter, the memories and the magic; though the stage will be quieter without you, the joy you brought to so many will never be forgotten."

Friends and fellow performers have also begun sharing tributes in memory of a man whose contribution to local theatre spanned many years.
