When Rich Weatherburn and Aidan Weatherburn opened Grandpa's Fish Bar in Lanchester, they were taking on a familiar challenge: breathing new life into a village chippy.
What has followed has been something rather less ordinary.
In little more than a year, the business has grown from a traditional fish and chip shop into a recognisable brand across County Durham, attracting national award recognition, building a substantial social media following and launching a mobile van that now serves communities across the North East.
The success has been built on a simple formula.

The brothers specialise in traditional fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, while customers regularly praise the quality of the food and the welcome they receive when they walk through the door.
Reviews describe the shop as a "little gem", with some travelling considerable distances to try it for themselves.
Alongside that, the business has developed a personality that extends well beyond the fryer.
Its social media channels are packed with humour, behind-the-scenes moments and interactions with customers, helping Grandpa's reach audiences far beyond Lanchester.
One TikTok video has attracted more than 1.5 million views.

This year marked another significant step when the team launched a custom-built mobile van, allowing them to cater at everything from village events and cricket clubs to pubs, workplaces and private celebrations.
That expansion means the business has increasingly found itself becoming part of people's milestone occasions.
In a recent social media post, the team revealed they had been asked to cater for a customer's 100th birthday celebration after receiving an email from the man's granddaughter, who was organising a surprise gathering for her grandfather.
Describing it as an honour, the business said there was "absolutely no way" they could refuse the booking, adding that it was privileged to play a role in such a significant family occasion.
It is the kind of story that perhaps explains why the business has resonated with so many people so quickly.
Earlier this year, Grandpa's Fish Bar reached the finals of the English Fish and Chip Awards before being named Best Multi-Site Operator - an accolade recognising both the success of its shop and its growing mobile operation.

For a business that opened its doors only recently, the trajectory has been remarkable.
