A former County Durham pub which has stood empty for years is set to get a new underage clientele.

The Grade II-listed Queen's Head on Chester-le-Street Front Street closed in September 2022 and was later put up for sale but attracted little interest from potential pub operators.

Now Durham County Council has approved plans by Banana Moon Day Nursery Ltd to convert the former hotel and pub into a nursery for up to 90 children.

The scheme could create around 30 jobs, made up of a mix of full and part-time roles.

The nursery would operate from 7am to 6.30pm on weekdays and would include outdoor play space and parking to the rear.

The Queen's Head has a prominent spot in the town centre and is a listed building.

Planning officers said bringing it back into use would be a positive move for the town centre and help improve the appearance of the historic building.

Only one letter supporting the proposal was received during the consultation process, with no objections lodged.

The decision notice granting planning permission was issued on October 7.
