A Darlington musician who has helped run a community orchestra for more than a decade has won a national volunteering award.
Vicky Bain, treasurer of Darlington Orchestra, was named Volunteer of the Year at the 2026 Making Music Awards, which celebrate outstanding contributions to leisure-time music.
The award, also known as the President’s Award, honours exceptional voluntary service within Making Music’s member groups, which include nearly 4,000 ensembles.
Ms Bain said: "It was a lovely surprise to be nominated, and quite a shock to be shortlisted, never mind actually winning.
"Thank you to those who voted for me.
"I’ve had the opportunity to play in Darlington Orchestra and try to make sure others can play in a community orchestra."
Making Music president and composer Debbie Wiseman OBE announced her win at the organisation’s online awards ceremony on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
Ms Bain has served on Darlington Orchestra’s committee for more than 12 years.
As treasurer, she keeps the orchestra running by managing its finances, liaising with venues, booking extra players and organising concerts.
She also makes members feel welcome, valued and included.
