An NHS dentist who has cared for patients and trained future clinicians in the North East for more than 25 years has won a top award.

Ushmita Johar, a specialty dentist in oral and maxillofacial surgery at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, was named regional SAS dentist of the year at the NHS England North East SAS Awards.

She was recognised for her dedication to patient care and training junior staff.

Ms Johar said: "I am absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to be named regional SAS dentist of the year.

"To have my hard work, dedication, and passion for patient care and work recognised at this level is incredibly rewarding."

She said: "I love my job. No two days are ever the same.

"My schedule involves a dynamic mix of hands-on surgical operating procedures, outpatient clinics, and administrative duties – including managing and organising rotas."

She also trains and mentors junior trainees and registrars, providing supervision, support and skills development.

She said: "I am immensely grateful to my wonderful team and colleagues for their continuous support.

"I would particularly like to thank our clinical director, Mr Bridle, for his unwavering support, as well as my senior colleagues whose encouragement, guidance, and mentorship have been invaluable throughout my career.

"I am fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic team that makes delivering excellent patient care possible every day."

Ms Johar also represents the North East on the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) and organises national training webinars.

The NHS England North East SAS Awards recognise the achievements, leadership and clinical excellence of SAS doctors and dentists across the region.

During SAS Awareness Week, which runs from October 5 to 9, Ms Johar urged people considering an SAS career to follow the path.
