Parents and carers in North Yorkshire can now apply for primary school places for children due to start school in September 2027.
Applications must be submitted by January 15, 2027, for children born between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023.
North Yorkshire Council is advising families to list up to five schools in order of preference when submitting their applications.
The council said a record 96 per cent of families secured their first-choice primary school this year, up from 95 per cent the previous year.
Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for education, learning and skills, said:
We know that choosing the correct primary school for families is important, which is why we have included lots of information about the application process and details about the county’s schools on our website.
For a child to be allocated a school place it is crucial that you make an application to the local authority where you live and the deadline to apply is January 15, 2027.
If parents or carers apply after the deadline, this could affect the allocation of your child’s school place.
Please remember, you still have to apply for a school place if your child is attending a nursery or has a sibling within the primary school you want them to go to.
School transport and catchment areas
Parents are also being urged to consider school transport eligibility when deciding which schools to include on their applications.
Under North Yorkshire Council’s home-to-school travel policy, free transport is generally provided to the nearest suitable school with available places where the distance from home exceeds the statutory walking distance, subject to the relevant eligibility criteria.
The council warns that a child’s catchment school for admissions purposes may not be the nearest suitable school for transport purposes.
Families can check the eligibility criteria and use the council’s online tool to identify their nearest school at North Yorkshire Council’s home-to-school travel webpage.
When will school places be confirmed?
Parents will be notified of their allocated school places on National Offer Day, April 16, 2027.
