A man remains in police custody after an altercation near a York museum saw two people taken to hospital with injuries.

North Yorkshire Police on Monday (October 12) said two men remained in hospital in a non-life-threatening condition following the incident in Leeman Road on Sunday.

The force said the man arrested on suspicion of serious assault and possession of an offensive weapon in public place at Hull Railway Station on Sunday afternoon in connection with the altercation in Leeman Road was still in police custody on Monday.

It follows police saying a bladed weapon was seen during the altercation involving three men in Leeman Road.

The incident resulted in the nearby Park Street, next to the National Railway Museum, being cordoned off throughout Sunday. Park Street has since reopened.

A manhunt was launched after police were called to the scene at about 2.20pm on Sunday, resulting in armed police, dog units and officers from the North Yorkshire and Humberside police forces swarming York city centre.

Police said inquiries remain ongoing into the incident on Sunday.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has relevant CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote reference 12260200081,” a police spokesperson said.

Speaking from Park Street on Sunday afternoon, an eyewitness said: “There was a heavy presence from the emergency services here at 3pm.

“A police cordon is in place in Park Street stretching around to Leeman Road.

“I could see at least three police cars, two ambulances and another ambulance vehicle at 3pm.

“By 3.20pm, both ambulances and the ambulance service’s car had left the scene.

“The railway museum’s road train remains inside the cordon but it appears that the incident is starting to be scaled back.

“Police are turning drivers around. It’s a quiet road so the main traffic I saw was taxis dropping people off for the railway museum. There are still people heading to the railway museum.

“I hope everyone is OK.”
