POLICE have issued an update after receiving reports of individuals fishing illegally in a York pond on privately owned land.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 10, North Yorkshire Police said the activity took place at Derwenthorpe pond without the permission of landowner Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust.
A force spokesperson said: "Fishing without the landowner's consent may constitute trespassing and can negatively impact local wildlife and the ability for residents to enjoy the area as intended.
"If you witness anyone fishing where they should not be, report suspicious activity to the landowner, note descriptions of individuals where safe to do so, as well as recording the location, date, and time of the incident.
"If a crime is taking place or there is an immediate risk to people, wildlife, or property, call 999, for non-emergency reports, contact North Yorkshire Police via 101 or online.
"Landowners can ask individuals to leave private land and may pursue civil action where appropriate.
"The Environment Agency can investigate offences relating to rod licences, illegal fishing methods, and fish theft.
"Police may become involved where offences such as theft of fish, criminal damage, anti-social behaviour, poaching, or public order issues occur."
