The long-awaited revamp of a Teesside shopping precincthub is nearing completion, with major brands circling the new units.

Eston ward councillors David Taylor and Stephen Martin shared an update on social media on Thursday (October 8), about the progress being made at the Eston Precinct.

They said commercial property agents Portland Dodds Brown had given them an "encouraging" update on marketing the new units and finding tenants.

The building work on the scheme is now said to be practically complete, allowing prospective occupiers to look around and step up lease negotiations.

Taylor and Martin said a major national company could soon take one unit, while another national chain is in the running for a second.

The largest unit, earmarked for a convenience store, has attracted strong interest from local and national operators, while smaller units are piquing the interest of independent businesses.

The Eston Precinct scheme has replaced the former building with seven new retail units providing around 14,650 square feet of retail and leisure space, alongside a landscaped public area designed to host markets and community events.

The project also includes new paving, seating, trees, lighting and facilities for outdoor activities and markets.

It is one of Eston’s biggest town-centre investments in decades.

Construction began after the ageing precinct was demolished in 2025, as part of efforts to create a more "vibrant and welcoming destination" for residents and visitors.

In September, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council said businesses had already shown strong interest in the new development, with a large unit at the heart of the scheme identified as a potential café or restaurant.

That unit remains one of the most talked-about spaces in the development, already designated for restaurant use with an approved alcohol and entertainment licence in place.

Taylor and Martin said research showed strong demand for a place where residents could eat and socialise without leaving the town.

But they said other proposals could still be considered and that they would personally welcome a gym returning to the town.

The council hopes more retailers and leisure operators will give residents greater choice, attract visitors and boost footfall for existing businesses, paving the way for future redevelopment.

The councillors said residents repeatedly ask for businesses such as a butcher or greengrocer, pointing to the popularity of similar traders at Eston Market.

With the finish line now in sight, they are keen to hear both from businesses interested in moving in and residents with ideas for the future of the precinct.
