New music initiative gives children across York chance to learn an instrument

A new musical initiative is launching across York primary schools.

The Great Tudor Recorder Project will officially begin in 10 local schools, aiming to provide children with extended access to music education.

The year-long scheme is designed to break down barriers by allowing children who might not usually have the opportunity to learn an instrument.

Renowned music educator Paul Harris has written a new recorder book, "Recorder for Beginners, the Tudor Way!" and is supplying each school with a full class set of these books, along with recorders.

The 10 schools involved are: Tang Hall Primary Academy, Fishergate Primary School, Woodthorpe Primary School, Scarcroft Primary School, Wheldrake with Thorganby Primary School, Dunnington Church of England Primary School, Naburn Church of England Primary School, Burton Green Primary School, St Paul’s Church of England Primary School, and Osbaldwick Primary Academy.

York Music Hub has sourced and funded four professional recorder tutors who will provide weekly lessons throughout the academic year.

The project will culminate in a large-scale concert where all 10 schools will perform together.

The University of York is conducting a research project alongside the musical timeline, monitoring the views of both pupils and teachers to track the project's success in inspiring young performers.
