If you are a huge fan of history, it is likely that you have visited many of the North East’s big castles and museums.

However, you might want to make a stop off at the smallest museum in Northumberland that many people often miss.

Found in Alnmouth only a short walk away from the village’s beach, The Ferryman’s Hut Museum might be one of the tiniest museums in the world.

What is the Ferryman's Hut Museum like?

The museum is found in a tiny hut and contains pictures, memorabilia, and trinkets about boating in Alnmouth.

In the early 1900s, there were beach huts found along the beach with locals needing a way to get over the Aln estuary to them.

A local set up a boat service to help ferry people over the estuary.

While the service stopped in the 1960s, as the beach huts were no longer used, the history of the little ferry service lives on in the tiny museum.

The museum can only fit two people in but is covered with photos and items that are linked to the old ferry service and area’s history.

You can visit the museum for free and leave a note in the visitors book before you leave.

Sometimes the museum curator can be found outside of the Ferryman’s Hut Museum and will answer any questions you have.
